There's nothing like the jewel-like swaths of color and texture that bulbs bring in spring, just when you can't take winter any longer. You can get this early dose of spring color by planting bulbs this coming fall. Forced bulbs are available but all good things come to those who plan. Let our team customize a planting plan that maximizes your early to late spring enjoyment of the garden. Bulbs are mother nature's way of telling us, hold on, don't despair, warmer weather is on the way! With a solid design her language is very compelling.

There's no doubt that green roofs are here to stay in NYC; they're an ecological must-have. They make drab rooftop spaces easier on the eyes, create wildlife habitat and reduce energy costs in the hotter months. Green roofs consist of special drainage mats, roof barriers, lightweight planting mediums and drought-tolerant plants. This vegetative and insulating layer on top of flat roofs also has the benefits of reducing storm run off and roofing membrane damage caused by UV rays.

If you have a commitment to an organic lifestyle, starting and maintaining an organic garden is essential.

If you have a commitment to an organic lifestyle, starting and maintaining an organic garden is essential. Whether it be an ornamental or edible garden, organic practices can easily be introduced and implemented. This includes a strategy of Integrated Pest Management to handle pests, a close attention to the conditions of your soils and the use of organic fertilizers and the ever-beneficial compost. And of course, choosing the proper plants for a space can lead to the best success for your garden. Start the gardening year off clean and go organic this spring.

If you have a sunny space outdoors, it's prime time to start up an urban vegetable and fruit patch. A number of crops will grow perfectly well in raised beds, containers and other urban-friendly situations. There's nothing quite like the experience of harvesting your own radishes and greens in the spring, or popping a sweet cherry tomato in your mouth on a sunny day in August. Given the proper maintenance, an urban vegetable garden can keep you and your family supplied with fresh veg all summer and fall.

Annie Christian is currently a full-time student at the New York Botanical Garden

Annie Christian is currently a full-time student at the New York Botanical Garden, working on a two-year degree in horticulture from the garden's School of Professional Horticulture. She loves working with plants, particularly when they're used to green up and beautify urban environments and maybe even feed a few city dwellers. She studied ecological sustainability and creative writing at Bard College and graduated with a multi-disciplinary degree. After college, she worked for the New York City parks department, farmed on a 27-acre organic farm in Amagansett, New York and took a curious detour to South Korea to teach English. Now she's ready to join the Brook Landscape team as a horticulturist intern to build her skills and share her knowledge of plants, particularly that concerning edibles and alpines.

Having a garden is like having a temperamental child; it may look wonderful, but the moment you leave it alone for too long, it gets out of control, starves and possibly withers away much to the horror of the parent. Similarly, a beautiful garden requires patience, attention and care. Some landscapes require more work than others and Brook Landscape offers maintenance plans to fit different needs. A strong management plan -from spring mulching to protecting shrubs from harsh windburn during the winter- protects your investment.
